What is new with our country?
A previous communique with our members was titled “Canada, the country where truth came to die”. The events that have transpired since that statement was made have only re-enforced in my mind this statement to be a true one. It almost overwhelms our comprehension that so many (almost all) of this country’s politicians, at any level, can be so blatantly dishonest. They utterly lack any integrity. They can stare into a television camera and tell us the most outrageous untruths, and smile while they are doing it. Is it more preposterous that they should expect us to believe their twaddle, or that many of our fellow citizens actually do!
Where to start in naming the numerous transgressions. Let us start with Floor Crossers. This has got to be one of the most egregious sins a politician can commit, they have sold their souls for 30 pieces of silver, as adjusted for 2000 odd years of inflation. To campaign for one political party and against another, then once elected claim to see the error of their ways and embrace their opponent as the true saviour of the nation is so vile it is difficult to adequately describe it. No defense is possible, their words are as banging gongs, signifying nothing. This action disenfranchises all who voted for them, it is the ultimate slap in the face to our democracy. I would wager my reference to the 30 pieces of silver re Judas betraying Christ would be lost on Floor Crosses as I doubt they have ever read a Bible or received any Christian instruction. Considering the severity of this issue, who commits the greater evil, the enticer or the enticed?
On a more local level, there are civic politicians in this province whose most urgent concern is dealing with homeless people living where they please, doing what they please, many addicted to drugs, many labeled as having mental health issues, all addicted to not contributing to society. Elected Civic Leaders seem to unanimously believe that free housing for such unfortunates is the first step to a remedy. In considering if free housing is part of the solution one need look no further than what has been done in San Fransico. The City of San Fransico has and does give homeless drug addicts free housing and monthly financial support, in concert with the Sate of California. Nothing is required from the homeless drug addict, they do not have to pursue sobriety, obtain gainful employment, or make any attempt to better themselves in any regard. Studies have shown this approach results in 80 percent of those treated in this way are dead within 10 years. A statistic such as this should indicate this approach does not work. Consider what many neighbourhoods in San Fransico and Oakland look like and that is not what we want for Saskatoon or Regina. Thankfully our Provincial Government has brought in their Compassionate Care Act, which will force the issue of dealing with this problem. Hopefully they will take a very aggressive approach with the implementation of this Act and start to address the issue. Dealing truthfully with people whose behaviour makes our society a worse place to live in is important, being truthful is sometimes unpleasant, but always necessary.
There are many other examples of the leaders in our various levels of government having no idea of how to behave truthfully with integrity. We merry few (UG members) need to live in truth and demand others do as well. Living a lie is what got us into this mess.
Try and stay positive, look to Alberta to see hope is alive and that we can obtain it as well, if we wish.
